Blackbeard was an extremely feared pirate. One day while he was having a party in Teach’s Hole. Then the governor of Virginia sent Lieutenant Robert Maynard to set out and kill Blackbeard. When he got to Teach’s Hole he was prepared to kill Blackbeard. They were engaged in a terrible battle. One of Maynard’s ships were between Blackbeard and freedom. Blackbeard sailed his ship toward shore and it looked like he was going to crash his ship, but instead he sailed into a narrow channel. He shot his cannons at Maynard’s ship that tried to follow them and many of Maynard’s men died. The rest were ordered to go under the deck to try to fool the pirates. When the pirates boarded the ship Maynard and his men attacked the pirates. The pirates put up a bloody fight. Blackbeard and Maynard came face to face and started fighting. They both shot at each other, but Blackbeard’s bullet missed and Maynard’s hit. One of Maynard’s men cut Blackbeard’s throat but he didn’t die. It took a total of 5 shots and 20 cuts to kill him.
After he died Maynard wanted to ensure he was dead and so they cut of his head. They hung his head from the bowsprit and through his body into the sea. When his body hit the water, his head hanging from the bowsprit shouted: "Come on Edward" and the headless his body swam three times around his ship, then sank to the bottom of the sea.It is said that he walks up and down beaches with lamp in one hand searching for his head. Sometimes his headless ghost floats on the surface of the water, or swims around and around and around Teach's Hole, glowing just underneath the water. Finally people sometimes see a strange light coming from the shore on the Pamlico Sound side of Ocracoke Island and know that it is "Teach's light".
